What Is Ayurveda?

The Vedic sages who originated the science of Ayurveda concluded thousands of years ago that all life and creation is made up of five elements: Ether (Space), Air, Fire, Water and Earth. The chemistry of our body and mind is made up of these same elements and is subject to imbalance through environmental, physical or emotional influences.

In Ayurveda, these elements are translated into three dynamic energies or forces that dominate the physical, mental and emotional systems. These three energies or “Doshas” are referred to as Vata (ether and air), Pitta (fire and water) and Kapha (water and earth). These three forces determine an individual’s state of balance or imbalance.

Every person is composed of a unique blend of these forces. By identifying the distinctive blend of the forces (doshas) within the individual, Ayurveda targets the specific imbalances and creates a treatment plan precisely designed for that individual.

Ayurveda is the only medical system available today that recognizes we are all individuals and our chemistry or constitution is unique to us.
